Since our last giveaway contest went so well (and the Dragon computer is on its way to our winner!), we thought you guys might be interested in yet another opportunity to win some cool stuff from Gear Live. That’s why we are giving away a one-of-a-kind customized , along with a bunch of accessories from LRG and Monster Cable. Even better? This time, we will have three winners.

What makes our so special? Well, we’ve had it customized and done up in Gear Live colors. Heck, we even put our logo on it, so you can rock the fact that you are a fan of what we do here. Also, we will unlock it for you, if you like, prior to sending it over. We are gonna make this one easy too. The contest starts today, and will end on July 2, 2008. Between now and then, we are gonna be monitoring comments left throughout Gear Live, and forum posts. If you are a regular participants in those areas, you will have an opportunity to win. On July 3, we will compile a list of members who have been active during the contest period, and we will then choose our first, second, and third place winners randomly. HP HDX Dragon giveaway

Alright, we’ve hyped it for over a month - the contest was our second biggest giveaway in the history of Gear Live. The rules were simple - interact with Gear Live and our community, and don’t spam. You earn points for different actions you take on the site, and the person with the most points at the end of the contest would be declared the winner, as long as they didn’t resort to spamming to get there.

We saw a lot of new activity across the board. Comments, forum posts, gallery comments, new members, and the list goes on…but there could only be one winner. Yesterday, we kicked off our week-long contest, where we are giving away an Dragon computer package, worth over $5,000 if you were to purchase each piece on your own. First, the details on what exactly we are giving away:

We’ve been working on a way to recognize you readers who participate here on our network of sites at Gear Live, and we are happy to announce the launch of Gear Live Points. In a nutshell, Points are awarded to users whenever they take any sort of interactive action on Gear Live. We think it’s a fun way to spice up your daily visits to the site.

You earn points for all the following actions:

  • Becoming a member: 100 points
  • Upload a member photo: 50 points
  • Choose or upload an avatar: 25 points
  • Posting a blog comment: 1 point
  • Posting a gallery comment: 1 point
  • Assign a forum signature: 10 points
  • Posting a forum topic: 2 points

Just had to share this…could you imagine being stuck in an elevator for 40 hours - almost two days? I can’t imagine all the lost productivity, let alone not being able to use the bathroom for that length of time. At least this guy got some sleep though!


John Moore over at Brand Autopsy has an interesting series of posts going on rightnow that focus on the impact that business are making. The legacies they are creating - or not creating - aren’t really thought about. This can apply to anyone, including you and I. How would you answer this about yourself or what you do?:

Does [insert your brand] provide such a unique product and customer experience that we would be saddened if it didn’t exist? Does [insert your brand] treat its employees so astonishingly well that those workers would not be able to find another employer to treat them as well? Does [insert your brand] forge such unfailing emotional connections with its customers that they would fail to find another company that could forge just as strong an emotional bond?

In this day and age, getting things done is getting harder due to the massive increase in the number of things that grab your attention on the Internet. David Allen is the expert on GTD, or “getting things done” - above you will find a fantastic talk he gave at on the subject. This goes out to everything with an overflowing email inbox, tons of open apps on your desktop, or those suffering from continuous partial attention in this Web 2.0 age. Maybe it’s just me, but I would have a real problem swimming underwater with the animal called the killer whale, which can destroy sharks. I’d have an even bigger problem putting my feet on its nose underwater, while it swam towards the surface at top speed, only to jump out and launch me into the air. Look at the picture above - it was taken while we were at SeaWorld Orlando (which thoroughly enjoyed.) I mean, look at how high that killer whale launched the trainer. Don’t get me wrong, the show is definitely a sight to behold…but, man…crazy.

By the way, if you ever get a chance to see these creatures up close, they are truly magnificent and beautiful.


Chris Aarons Sofrito

Believe me - I know the image in this post is of horrible quality, but what do you expect when the lights at Sofrito in NYC dim for a birthday celebration? Above you see my friend, Chris Aarons, enjoying the delightful serenading of the Sofrito waitstaff, accompanying a bowl of ice cream with a candle in it. Oh, except, it wasn’t his birthday at all.

I was actually eating dinner at another table with my family, and it just so happened that Chris was sitting near us at his own table, alongside his partner-in-crime, Geoff, as well as Sal from Geeks.com and Michael from Hardware Geeks. I figured I’d send him something to remember me by, so I told a waiter that I knew for a fact that it was that man’s birthday today. The rest is history.

Oh, and Chris got screwed with the ice cream. The lady at the next table got a tres leches cake. That’s what I expect on my birthday…
